The Rite of Christian Initiation
for Adults (RCIA) program is the process for those who come to the church
seeking to join the Catholic Faith and receive the Sacraments of Initiation:
Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist. Prior to beginning this process,
an individual comes to some knowledge of Jesus Christ, considers his/her
relationship with Jesus and is usually attracted in some way to the Catholic
Our program at Our Lady Queen of peace begins in September with the "Pre-Catechumenate" period during which the parish RCIA Team helps the inquirer identify just what he or she is seeking - continuing on with more detailed instruction in order to receive the Sacraments of Initiation, or just finding out more about the Catholic faith.
The "Catechumenate" period continues the process and begins with the Rite of Acceptance in which the inquirers declare their intention to join the Church and the Church, in turn, accepts them into the "Catechumenate." Those who have never been baptized in another faith are called Candidates. This period continues with more detailed instructions and a Sponsor is chosen/assigned to assist the Candidates through the process.
The instructions continue until the beginning of Lent, at which time the Catechumens and Candidates are called to the Cathedral Basilica for the Rite of Election at which their names are placed in the Book of the Elect. This initiates the period of "Purification and Enlightenment," which takes place during Lent and is a time for spiritual preparation for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist that are to be received at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night.
The period of "Postbaptismal Catechesis" or "Mystagogy" is a time for the Church community and the "neophytes," those who have just received the Sacraments of Initiation, to grow together as a parish family and share their grasp of the Paschal Mystery, making it a part of their lives.
If you know someone who has expressed an interest in the Catholic Faith, please invite them to consider coming to this year's RCIA program. If you are interested in learning more about our faith, please consider attending yourself. Consult the bulletin for the time and location of RCIA meetings.
